Frequently asked questions
Why is it called ‘Masters’ swimming?
Don’t be intimidated by the term ‘Masters’ - it simply refers to adults passionate about swimming, regardless of skills or speed. Our club welcomes anyone over 18 who wants to improve their swimming, increase their fitness, and meet new people who also like swimming.
Who can swim with our Masters club?
Anyone 18+ keen to increase their fitness, race in competitions, swim for fun, or improve their swimming skills.
I’m not a fast swimmer, can I still join?
Absolutely! It doesn’t matter how fast or fit you are. Our club welcomes swimmers of all abilities to come along and give it a try and have fun. We have experienced coaches who can provide advice on stroke technique and help you improve your swimming.
What does a regular training session look like?
Starting 5-10 minutes prior to the training session start time, the coach will provide swimmers with information about the structure of the session plus any specific aspects such as drills. Each training session starts with a warm-up (around 8-10 minutes) before any drills or pre-set, which is then followed by the main set (which may consist of one or more sub-sets). The session ends with a short cool-down, usually around 200m.
I can’t do a particular stroke, can I still join?
Yes. Just let the coach know that you can’t or don’t feel comfortable doing a particular stroke and substitute it for one you do feel comfortable with.
Do I have to compete in swim meets?
No. Many swimmers join our club simply to improve their fitness and swimming skills, have other swimmers to train with, and help stay motivated to keep swimming.
Our coaches can answer any questions about racing at meets and provide support and encouragement if you are thinking about racing.
If you decide to enter a swim meet, you can choose from the events on offer according to your preference of distance and stroke. The atmosphere at swim meets is generally relaxed and friendly, and there is often a social gathering afterwards.
I’m competitive, but don’t want to race. Are there any other activities I can participate in?
Yes. Masters Swimming Australia has a few popular programs you can participate in to challenge yourself – the Vorgee Endurance 1000 and the Vorgee Million Metres.
