Report by Al Byrne
Our ACT Interclub meets have become firm local favourites, with a well deserved reputation as relaxed, social events. The first meet for 2017 was hosted by our friends from Molonglo Water Dragons, utilising the heated 50m outdoor pool at Queanbeyan Aquatic Centre. As always, the organising team were well supported by enthusiastic volunteers from each of the local clubs.
As the first outdoor ACT Interclub in five years, we were lucky enough to be blessed with an absolutely sparkling afternoon on Sunday 26 February 2017.
This event saw the best turnout on record at an ACT Interclub – with over 60 swimmers representing our own Tuggeranong Vikings, as well as Molonglo Water Dragons, Ginninderra Swim Club and even two North Sydney Masters swimmers who had made the trek down the highway to Canberra.
With the 2017 National Championships looming in early March, our competitive swimmers peaked nicely, with a number of fast times being recorded. PBs weren’t restricted to the faster swimmers either, as several social/endurance swimmers posted similar improvements. The full results show the depth and breadth of achievements.
While the approach of sunset and pool closing time unfortunately meant the cancellation of the planned relay events, spirits weren’t dampened, with a crowd of swimmers kicking on afterwards to a certain well-known local watering hole, proving, again, that it really is all about fun, fitness and friendship!
The final club point scores from the afternoon were …
