The annual Sri Chinmoy Lake Swims are Canberra’s oldest competitive lake swims, held since 1987, and well known for the friendly atmosphere and the beautiful location at Yarralumla Bay. This year it was a beautiful crisp Sunday morning on 19 February 2017. The water was flat, the sky was blue and clear and there was no wind — perfect! Well, almost perfect – the only minor inconvenience encountered was the difficulty sighting ahead on the second leg, as the sun was in a tricky spot!
A dozen Tuggeranong Masters swimmers took part this year.
In the 5km event Ben and Jenna Freeman both took out first place in the U50s, with Nick Grinter (almost a Viking!) collecting third place in the same division. Greg Gourley (second 60-69M), Nicolee Martin (first 50-59F) and Suzie Gunning (second 50-59F) all had great swims, while Andrea Teunissen showed real determination completing her swim.
In the 2.5 km swim, our Vikings ladies took all the glory in the 50-59F division with Anne Smyth, Jeanette Droop and Ann Reid finishing in first, second and third! Merilyn Bassett finished first in her 60-69F age group and it was great to see Ian Hampton up from Cooma, taking out second place in the 60-69M group. Dave Hennessy also had a good swim, finishing in the top ten in the 50-59M grouping.
In the 500m swim, both Catherine Alexander (second place) and Maria Castles (fourth place) had very enjoyable swims.
Pancakes were a well deserved treat at the end of the race!
