NSW Relay Championships — 20 July 2014

Report by Caroline Makin

19 Tuggeranong Vikings and Molonglo Water Dragons joined forces yet again to swim a total of 22 relays in the NSW Relay Championships, which were held in the the 25m diving pool at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre (SOPAC) on Sunday, 20 July 2014.

Many of our swimmers did lots of team bonding and carb-loading in the pub on the Saturday night before the meet – mainly carbs of the beer and wine variety – which set them up nicely for their racing on the Sunday.

Swimming for the ACT this year were: David Bale, Annette Britten, Ross Burden, Kade Burgess, Donna Campbell, Leisa Cass, John Collis, Roger Dietrich, Jeanette Droop, Andreas Falkaneu, Richard Flockart, Greg Gourley, Rachel Harrison-Wyatt, Kristen Leydon, Caroline Makin, Tara Olsthoorn, Mary-Liz Partridge, Gary Stutsel and Marianne Tweedie.

After a major technical hitch with the electronic timing in the first event, the mens 4x100m Freestyle, and our boys waiting behind the blocks ready to go for around 40 minutes, they final took off with the timekeepers taking up manual timing instead to get things moving along again. Fortunately, electronic timing issues were resolved a couple of events later!

Our team managed to notch up enough points to finish in overall 9th place from 20 clubs – pretty impressive considering all but one club that finished above the ACT had more swimmers.

Final top 10 club placings were …
