ACT Interclub Meet – 22 June 2014

Report by Roger Dietrich & Caroline Makin

A very successful ACT Interclub Meet was held on Sunday, 22 June 2014 at the Tuggeranong pool which was a warm up for the Tuggeranong BPS  Meet that will be held later in the year.  Fifty five swimmers from both the Tuggeranong Vikings and the Molonglo Water Dragons met for some local rivalry. The event was the largest Interclub Meet hat has been held in the ACT for a number of years with a great turnout from both clubs.

Tuggeranong President, Leisa Cass thanked everyone for attending and also thanked the many suffering swimmers spouses, nieces and family members that helped out with timekeeping and other duties.

A huge spread of food and drinks was cooked up by Tuggeranong’s Mandy Coggins and the ‘Thursday Morning Ladies’, which was very much appreciated by all. Mandy’s husband, Peter swims for Molonglo so they have Interclub rivalry within their household and apparently that they do not talk to one another before a meet like this!!

Annette Britten was also on hand to demonstrate why she won the State Administration Award at this years AGM; she did so many things in the lead up and kept the organisers all on track during the afternoon. How does the starting system work? – ask Annette. How does the PA system work? – ask Annette. Are the swimmers cards done? – yes Annette did them. Are the heat/lane cards for the 25m swims out ?- yes Annette has them. You get the idea. Without her knowledge and experience, it just wouldn’t have come together quite so well.

John Collis had many poolside jokes and even had his members eating fish iil in the lead up to the meet with the belief that it would make them swim faster, but he also suggested that tuna oil would be best as tuna swim faster!

The total point scores for the meet were as follows:

Tuggeranong Vikings Women – 763
Molonglo Water Dragons Women – 262
Tuggeranong Vikings Men – 413
Molonglo Water Dragons Men – 410

… and the total relay scores were:

Tuggeranong Vikings Women – 38
Molonglo Water Dragons Women – 38
Molonglo Water Dragons Men – 40
Tuggeranong Vikings Mixed – 118

Tuggeranong were the victors on this occasion, but Molonglo provided great competition in the best Interclub meet in many years and you can read the Molonglo meet report to get their view on the event! In all it was a great meet and swimming won again, and you can check out the full results and relay results for all swims.

In addition a large contingent of swimmers had a social night out after the meet at the Tuggeranong Vikings Club to replace the calories that were lost from so much great swimming.

We are certainly in store for a great and very well organised inaugural Tuggeranong BPS Meet on 20 September 2014 and there will be another Interclub meet in the ACT later in the year in November at the new pool at Gungahlin in the northern suburbs of Canberra.
