Not many swimming pools in the world have such an amazing location as North Sydney Pool. Plastered between the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the gaping neon lit mouth of Luna Park, it is a destination worth swimming at.
And so, on a recent Saturday 15 February 2014, five Tuggeranong Viking swimmers decided to test out their sprint techniques in this wonderful iconic venue.
The North Sydney Sensational Summer Sprint BPS Meet starts with a warm up at 7.00pm and runs smoothly and quickly to finish around 10pm ending with pizza and soft drink. All events are 50 meters with a medley relay at the finish. Next year it will be a freestyle relay — they alternate every other year.
Venturing for the first time to this event was Jane Saye along with long time participants Ann Reid, Catherine Alexander, Mandy Coggins and Cecelia Kaye. In all there were 180 swimmers from clubs throughout NSW with the largest number of participants coming from North Sydney, Ryde, Warringah and Manly.
It seems that storm clouds always gather at this time of the year and the usual on/off rain coincided with this year’s event. It didn’t worry the participants and with new covering over the seating area it didn’t worry the spectators too much either.
Our swimmers were very pleased with their times, mostly coming in under their predicted times and even achieving PB’s in some events. A highlight for Cecelia was watching her son’s return to competition and swimming impressive times for North Sydney. Despite the drizzle, it was a really enjoyable and fun night for Masters swimming.
