Tuggeranong Challenge – 14 September 2013

Report by Ann Smyth

The Tuggeranong Challenge was held on Saturday 14 September 2013 with a reasonable number of our swimmers in attendance. We were pleased to welcome 14 visiting swimmers to our event, which tied in with Floriade. It was a good opportunity for swimmers to practise their racing skills and for the officials to gain their qualifications. It was great to have some of our newer members competing. Well done to Ian Bell, Tara Olsthoorn, Alix Palmer, Petrina Quinn, Max Van Gelder and Jane Waddleton for supporting the club.

The aim of the Tuggeranong Challenge is for swimmers to swim as close as possible to their nominated times over 3 distances: 50m, 100m and 200m, each in a different stroke. The event was, as usual, closely contested, with Caroline Makin taking out the top spot for the second year in a row. She was followed by Pam Munday in second and Mary-Liz Partridge from Molonglo in third.

The final event of the afternoon was the Champagne Shoot-Out Relay. All relay teams were handicapped according to an earlier swim and the promised reward of champagne at the end made for an exciting finish. The winning team was Pam Munday, Katrina Burgess, Ian Bell and Nick Dando.

The afternoon finished with drinks and dinner at the Tuggeranong Vikings Town Centre Club where everyone enjoyed a good catch up after a fun afternoon in the pool.

Next year  the Tuggeranong Challenge will become a BPS Meet which is fantastic news for our club and means we should get a big turn out from our Sydney and regional clubs. So keep 20 September free next year as we will need lots of help from everyone organising and running the meet and, of course, swimming!
