Report by Caroline Makin
Caroline Makin and her husband Scott took the opportunity to combine a swim meet and wine tasting in the Hunter Valley, NSW, and headed to a few favourite wineries on the Friday afternoon before the Hunter Festival of Sport Meet on Saturday 29 June 2013.
Caroline firmly believes that a crucial part of her pre-meet race preparation is a few glasses of quality Aussie wine, so this was a perfect opportunity to ensure that she was well prepared for her four swims at the pool in Toronto.
First up was a nice short 25m Butterfly, where Caroline achieved a personal best time. Caroline then took on the much tougher 200m Breaststroke event, and with Owen Sinden from Campbelltown Masters in the next line, a great race was watched by the other competitors and this low-key event. Neck and neck at 100m, Owen pulled away a little ahead of Caroline in the 3rd 50m and then edged a bit further ahead in the final 50m, but pulling Caroline along with him and resulting in her smashing five seconds off her PB time!
Next up with not much rest after the 200m Breastroke, Caroline punched out a decent 50m Butterfly, although a little off her PB for this event. She finished with a 100m Breaststroke which was a disappointing end to her swims for the day, with a slower time than in her split in the 200m event!
Overall, Caroline finished equal first place in her age group.
