Manly BPS Meet – 19 August 2012

Report by Anne Smyth

We had a strong team of five swimmers representing Vikings at the Manly BPS Meet held at Abbotsleigh Pool in Sydney on Sunday 19 August 2012.  The team included Richard Flockart, David Bale, Caroline Makin, Philippa Rickard and Anne Smyth.

The team performed well finishing in 9th place overall in the Point Score, and were pretty happy with their swims with some impressive PB’s swum by a few, despite some rather excessive partying the night before! Anne was feeling the effects after catching up with friends and Caroline and Philippa had a big night celebrating Philippa’s imminent return to the UK and Caroline’s husband’s Scott’s birthday!

Results:

Seaside Pirates BPS Meet – 5 August 2012

Report by Caroline Makin

Scott and Caroline Makin left Canberra at 8am on their day trip to Knox Grammar School in Wahroonga, Sydney. They arrived at the rather splendid pool at 12pm ready for the start of the warm up for the Seaside Pirates BPS Meet on Sunday, 5 August 2012.

This lovely 50m pool had the boom in for this 25m SC meet.  The were electronic timing pads and olympic standard starting blocks, which was pretty impressive.

First up for Caroline was the 200m Freestyle.  With a realistic entry time of her PB, Caroline ended up in a very fast heat with all the fastest men on the day.  She went out in PB pace, and felt fine for the first 75-100m, then the lactic hit. She kept digging in and was still on PB pace at the 150m mark, but she had nothing left in the tank for the last 50m with tired legs and tired arms, she struggled home, too far behind all the men, in a final time of two seconds over her PB.

Next up 50m Breaststroke and this swim proved that Caroline’s Breaststroke has definitely gone off form at the moment!

Finally, the 100m Freestyle and Caroline was hoping to break the 1:13 mark again for the third time, but this was not to be.  Coming home in 1:13.74, a little disappointing and a second slower than she swam her lead off leg in the relay meet two weeks earlier.

All in all, 29 points, no disasters, but no really noteworthy performances!

ACT Interclub Duel Meet – 29 July 2012

Report by David Bale

The second ACT Interclub Meet for the year was held on Sunday, 29 July 2012 at CISAC on the northside of Canberra. There was a good attendance from the Vikings Masters as usual with eighteen swimmers but a slightly disappointing roll up by the Molongolo Water Dragons with seven swimmers.

The meet was obviously dominated by Vikings swimmers and there were some great performances all round. Vikings efforts of note were definitely:

  • Marianne Tweedie who at her first meet did a tidy 6:07.57 for the 400m Freestyle;
  • Jon McRae who at his first local meet also swam a 400m Freestyle and did so in 7:25.84;
  • Nicolee Martin one of our newer members completed her 400m Freestyle in 6:19.76;
  • Atsuko McGowan impressed all with her 200m Imdividual Medley in 2:57.92;
  • Richard Flockart showed his Butterfly skills completing 100m in 1:25.72;
  • Opal Eddy was at her consistent best with a 100m Backstoke effort in 3:13.11;
  • Annette Britten tried something new with a 100m Breaststroke in a respectable 1:50.96;
  • Luke McGowan was dynamic in his 50m Breaststroke finishing a speedy 38.89;
  • Pam Munday pumped out her 50m Freestyle in a nice round 38.00 flat; and
  • Greg Gourley finished his afternoon with a 32.76 50m Freestyle.

Well done to everyone who competed in such a friendly manner.

We hope everyone is getting ready for the next big meet which is our local Tuggeranong Challenge scheduled for Saturday 15 September. Get your entries in – it is a great meet where the fastest is not the winner but the one who can swim closest to their entry times. Ann Reid and Pam Munday have been recent winners.

See you in the water!
