Report by David Bale
The sun did not shine early on Australia Day in Sydney, yet over 800 people lined up to swim the Sydney Harbour right next to the Opera House for the The Great Sydney Swim. There were three distances to choose from: 300m (for the kids), 750m and 2.2km and the heavy cloud cover coupled with a bit of a swell made for a challenging swim.
David Bale was the only Viking to head north to enjoy Australia Day in Sydney starting with the 2.2km swim in the Harbour. David finished in 35:18, placing 35th of 82 in the Male 35-39 age group and 142nd overall Male from 450 swimmers.
The swim was organised by Ky Hurst who has already qualified for the Open Water Swim in the 2012 Olympics in London. It was cool to be in the same water with many of Australia’s elite open water swimmers, and in such an iconic location!
