Meet report from Ian Hampton
The 1st ACT Interclub Duel Meet for 2011 was held at Queanbeyan Pool (Outdoor 50m LC) on 20 March 2011.
This was another excellent meet — thanks to Molonglo Club, especially Gary and Audrey Stutsel for organising and both clubs who turned up in strength. There was a good spirit of friendly competition all afternoon especially during the relays, despite the cold weather and some rain!
Looking through the results, the following stands out:
Nice 200m Breaststroke swims by Tania Arnold 3:20.09 and Pam Munday 3:44.49.
A solid 200m Butterfly from David Bale in 3:31.49s — good “warm-up” for his swim in the same event at the NSW Long Course Championships.
A solid 200m IM by Annette Britten in3:24.99 — once again a good warm-up for competing in the same event at the NSW Long Course Champs.
A lonely 200m Freestyle swim by Caroline Makin in 2:53.49, swimming in a heat all on her own in the centre lane of what must have felt like a very large 50m pool.
The most competitive event was the men’s 35-39 50m Freestyle won by Luke McGowan in 31.16s with David Bale and Terence Ingram only 1.16 and 1.77s behind respectively.
The most contested event was the women’s 50-54 100m freestyle won by Liz Needham in 1:23.51s from Kathryn Elliott and Beverley Turner from Molonglo, with Gillian Laughton coming in 4th.
Bragging rights from the relay swims goes to the Vikings mens’ 160+ team (Luke McGowan, Terence Ingram, Ian Hampton and David Bale) who turned in a sharp-ish 2:14.68s ahead of the Molonglo mens 240+ team in 2:23.55s, only just ahead of the Vikings womens 120+ team (Atsuko McGowan, Kristen Leydon, Caroline Makin and Annette Britten) in 2:23.88s. Special mention to Jane Lindsay who stepped into the breach at the last minute to complete the Vikings womens 240+ team of Brenda Day, Pauline Rohan, Jane and Pam Munday who swam a credible 3:34.63s.
Overall points score was Vikings 430 points and Molonglo 387 points. Round 1 win goes to the Vikings!
