Event report from Caroline Makin
The 7th annual Sri Chinmoy National Capital Swim for Solo Swimmers and Relay Teams was staged on Sunday 14 November 2010. Despite a forecast of rain and wind threatening to make for tough going, conditions turned out nigh perfect for this open water event. A water temperature of around 21 degrees allowed more than half the field to swim sans-wetsuit.
One solo Viking, Greg Gourley, donned his wetsuit and swam his way up the entire 9km length of Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffin.
‘Iron-man’ Greg achieved this mammoth swim in a fantastic time of 2:36:53, finishing in 9th place overall in the solo competition, 1st place in his age group, and 10th place overall including the five teams.
The 9km swim consisted of four legs, and Greg’s splits were as follows:
1.79 Km 28:30
2.53 Km 44:24
2.76 Km 54:56
1.87 Km 29:03
….. pretty impressive Greg … well done!
